My Maytag top-loading washer (model MVW6230HW0, purchased in spring 2021) displays 'Sensing, then Add Garments' and then 'washing complete' after about a minute when I try to run it. I'm trying to run a 1/2 load of towels and have reloaded them, but the issue persists. There are no error codes, and I see a symbol on the LED display that looks like a drum with water and a dot with 'petals' around it. What could be causing this issue and what can I do to fix it?

I have an 80-gallon electric hot water heater (GE/Rheem model# SE80T12TAH) that stopped working. I found a blown fuse at the shut-off box above the unit, changed it, but the switch inside the shut-off box later melted and burnt. I suspect the heating element but have no way to check it with a meter. The unit is under warranty, but the technician charged me $150 to tell me the fuse was bad. What could be the issue, and is it safe to run the wires directly from the panel to the unit, bypassing the external shut-off?
