What is the best codec to watch movies in Windows Media?

Every time I try to watch a movie or TV show online on my L505D-S5965 laptop, it keeps lagging and/or jerking. Can you help me? My laptop is four years old and I am using an ethernet connection. I have a virus scan running in the background and many programs on my desktop.
