I've encountered the "NTVDM.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close" error on a Windows XP SP3 2005 vintage Compaq Presario laptop when trying to run a legacy program in full screen mode. The programs that run in a command prompt window work fine, and the programs that require full screen work fine in safe mode. I've followed the diagnostic procedures recommended by Microsoft and Microsoft forums, ran the hotfix plus other standard diagnostics, and checked for updates. What could be causing this issue and how can it be resolved without reinstalling Windows or SP2 & SP3?

I have a Gateway SX2380-UR308 with SN: DT9DEAA00123608E859200. My DVD player is not shown on 'My Computer' with the hard drive and other drives. When I go to Device Manager, it shows a yellow caution on the DVD drive or any USB DVD external DVD drive. How can I fix this issue?

When I launched Ubuntu and logged in, nothing was on the desktop, just the background screen. I used the Windows XP installer for Ubuntu. It boots up, asks for a password, then goes blank. What should I do?
