My 15-year-old dog, Lucky, has been experiencing itching and large scabs all over his body for the past 2 1/2 weeks. He has been licking and rubbing the itchiness, and has started sleeping in spots he never did before. What could be causing this and what should I do?

I accidentally spilled 2% gentian violet and my dog, Vinnie (a 2-year-old boxer weighing 74 pounds), licked some while I was cleaning it up. His tongue and mouth are stained purple, and I'm unsure how much he actually ingested. It happened about 20 minutes ago, and he hasn't vomited. What should I do?
