My 6-year-old English Mastiff, Sophie, has a swollen knee joint with subsequent muscle atrophy due to inability to bear weight. This issue has recurred despite treatment with glucosamine and chondroitin, and it has worsened over the past three weeks. Sophie is otherwise acting normal and has no other health issues. What could be causing this swelling, and are there any other treatment options besides surgery?
