My dog has a cough and sometimes he hacks up mucus. The cough started a couple of nights ago and sounds like a gagging cough. My dog has no history of heart trouble. What could be causing the cough and what steps should I take?

We have a 16-year-old dog recently diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. Last week, he had GI upset and was given mirtazapine and tramadol. This morning, he had bloody diarrhea. We just gave him 1 cc of metronidazole. He's drinking water and acting okay. Should we let him rest or take him to the ER?
