I have an 11-year-old German Shepherd suffering from demodectic mange, which appears in 3 or 4 patches, mostly over the hind quarters; the animal is not on a commercial diet. How can I control this condition?

My German Shepherd is turning 9 in July and is very healthy and at a good weight. Two weeks ago, I noticed her right back paw dragging slightly on the pavement. I took her to the vet, who ran tests that she passed and observed her walking without pain. They prescribed prednisone, but after reading about its side effects, I'm weaning her off it. I've noticed her back paw pad seems slightly larger than the other. She can still get on the bed and into my truck without crying. Do you think the vet overlooked something by prescribing prednisone too quickly? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
