My 12-year-old Shih Tzu, Chino, started coughing after eating BBQ on December 30th. He had no known heart or lung conditions. He had coughed in the past but not frequently. He had a dental cleaning with intubated gas for sedation two weeks prior. The temperatures dropped in Florida, and he was not used to the cold. On December 31st, his coughing worsened. I gave him medications used for my other dog with congestive heart failure, including Pimobendan, Hydrocodone, Furosemide, and a low-dose aspirin. His condition deteriorated, and he passed away. The vet found no signs of damage from the BBQ, and his heart and lungs appeared normal. I'm seeking reassurance and the truth about whether the medications I gave him could have caused his death.
