My Miniature Pinscher, Gus, is in pain with a swollen abdomen, panting even when resting, and unable to get comfortable. He is also lethargic and whimpers when his sides are touched. He has been like this for a few days, with a worsening condition this evening. What could be causing this and should I take him to an emergency vet?

Our 14-year-old black lab/American shepherd mix, Cocoa, is tearing up and eating carpet in our living room and hallway daily, mostly at night when we're asleep. We've taken her to the vet, who put her on pain medications, including one for anxiety, but the behavior is getting worse. Cocoa has cancer and arthritis.
