We have a 10-year-old black lab who had surgery 3 months ago for an infection in his leg. Since then, he has developed a scabby skin condition and inflammation on his scrotum, followed by a severe dry nose, cracking, scabbing, and peeling. The vet suggested using bag balm, but the condition persists. The dog is otherwise healthy, with the same energy, good appetite, and sense of smell. What could be causing the persistent nose condition, and should we be concerned about long-term effects or if it is painful or fatal?
