I have a painful lump under the skin on the back of my neck. It is not a pimple type lump. It is under the skin. What can it be?

My boyfriend has had various infections over the past 6 weeks, including an abscess on his knee, severe pink eye, and an anal abscess that was drained. He now has an ear infection. He is 34, heterosexual, normally in great health, not overweight, and exercises regularly. The doctor says it's all coincidental. Is this truly coincidental, and if so, what could be the cause of these recurring infections? Can stress be a factor, and what is the main cause of an anal abscess?
