I am a regular practitioner of Bikram Yoga, which is performed in 105-degree heat and 40% humidity. After each session, my clothes and towel smell like ammonia. Some Bikram practitioners hypothesize that the intense exercise depletes glycogen stores and the body starts metabolizing protein, leading to ammonia in sweat. Is it possible for this to happen, and am I really sweating ammonia? Additionally, I am considering opening a Bikram-style yoga studio with classes at 95 degrees and 40% humidity. Is there research on the maximum heat tolerance for most people to avoid this ammonia issue?
