Hello, I am looking to get divorced. I came to the U.S. on a Fiancee Visa and obtained an unconditional, 10-year green card a few years later. I have been separated from my American husband for more than a year now. I am wondering if there are necessary steps I need to take and if filing for divorce will affect my citizenship status.

I foolishly co-signed student loans for both my children with Sallie Mae. Neither have jobs that can support them 100 percent, but also have no funds to pay on their loans. My wife and I have been able to pay the loans for them, but we are getting along in years and do not know how much longer we will be able to be employed. When we are both on Social Security and drawing off our 401K's, what, if anything, can Sallie Mae get from us if we can no longer pay. We live in New York state residents.
