I work as a security guard for a bar in Kansas City, Missouri, as an independent contractor. There have been numerous problems since I started two years ago, and no contract has been signed between us. We only signed 1099 forms. I need to know my rights and where I stand. Am I an employee or an independent contractor, and what separates the two? Additionally, I have to follow house rules and other random rules, and if I don't, I'm threatened with losing my job. I also work 10-hour shifts without breaks and am not allowed to use force to remove patrons or bring cell phones with me. There is a strict dress code that profiles African Americans, which concerns us for our safety. We've been threatened with guns, knives, words, and assault. If I don't comply with these rules, I get fired. Is there anything I can do about this?

The athletic director has further incensed this case by going to other athletic directors in my surrounding area to defame me or tell others not to hire me as a coach.
