My mother passed away in California last month. She didn't have a will, any property, or a spouse, and I am her only child. She had SSI, a 401k, credit card debt, and medical bills. The bank told me I would be liable for her credit card debt if her estate couldn't cover it. Do I need a probate attorney, and what should I do about her bank account and debts?
