My parents, who are now ill and broke, have been giving a family member $15,000 to $20,000 per year for the last 20 years through checks, and cashed in CDs for about $35,000 in cash. Their monthly income of $5,200 would cover assisted living, but they've been denied acceptance to three facilities and are awaiting an examination at a fourth. If denied again, a skilled care facility (nursing home) seems like the only option. I'm concerned about the Medicaid look-back period of 5 years and how the gifting will affect their eligibility. What can be done to help them qualify for Medicaid?
