Our son had his identity stolen approximately 10 years ago. We've always just answered bill collectors with an IRS letter stating 'someone else is using your social security #'. Now he's served with child support papers from Tennessee. The papers are from the State of Florida, child support division, via the State of Tennessee child support division. Our son has lived in FL since 1983, working continually here in Jacksonville, FL. It's obvious it's not our son they are looking for—though it's his name & social security # XXXXX the papers say he's 5 ft 4 in with blue eyes. Our son is 5 ft 9 in with brown eyes. My legal question is: Can we answer this ourselves & especially with this obvious difference in physical description now be done with the identity theft or is this a case we'll wish we had hired an attorney?

My client has a 5-year-old son and will be seeking custody in a couple of months. If she rents a one-bedroom apartment (with the bedroom for her son and the living room for herself), will this meet the housing regulations required by the local social services department as being adequate? Or does she need to rent a two-bedroom apartment? I have tried contacting the local social service agency but can't get an answer.

I brought a civil suit against a company in another state and had to use a lawyer from my home state. The out-of-state lawyers received 40% of the judgment and were supposed to pay the in-state lawyer his 10% from their share. Now they claim they get 40%, the in-state lawyer gets 10%, and I get 50%. Is this distribution legal?

We had a medical emergency that caused us to fall behind on mortgage payments and other bills, leading to a drop in our credit scores. We provided proof of the medical emergency, and some creditors are reviewing our case to possibly remove the negative ratings. We are now paying off our debts, with only one item going to a collection agency. We are also planning to sell our house in April 2007 and move to California within six months. At this rate, will we be able to get another mortgage?
