My 76-year-old mother is in the hospital in Naples, FL. She was having difficulties breathing and is now on a ventilator. I am told that her diaphragm is not working properly. They have done numerous tests but have not found the source to cause this. What are the possible causes of her diaphragm malfunction, and what tests or treatments should be considered?

I have a history of a bicuspid aortic valve with stenosis and an ectatic aortic root, vascular spasm (coronary artery, ocular migraines, and TIA), and glaucoma evidenced by left eye blind spots. Could the optic nerve damage have preceded the glaucoma, and should I see a Neurologist?
