My husband has a swollen elbow with fluid, slight pain when hanging his arm down or stretching it out straight, and no redness. He woke up with this yesterday morning. What could be causing this swelling, and what can be done to treat it?

Is it appropriate to rule out pulmonary embolism (PE) in my friend Zoe, given her elevated D-dimer of 830, negative extremity ultrasounds, and no shortness of breath, with oxygen saturation at 100%? She has been on heparin prophylaxis for over two weeks and has a history of POTS and cellulitis.
