I have triplets who are 19 and living at college full time. I am divorced, and the agreement was that one year I would take 2 children as deductions and the next year 1 child, and the other parent would do vice versa. The dependents are not filing on their own as they didn't make that much income. I completed the FAFSA just based on my income as the other parent does nothing to contribute. I took out parent plus loans for all 3 kids, purchased their books, and got all the supplies for their dorms. I texted the other parent and told him that I was claiming all 3 kids this year, and he said that I would have to explain that to the IRS because there is an agreement about dependency exemptions. All 3 children are away living at school and when they come home, they go back and forth between the 2 houses from time to time. The custody agreement was my house Monday through Friday, his house every weekend, and every other Wednesday overnight. To me, it sounds like I have the right to claim all 3 kids, but he says his accountant says I don't. Please advise.
