I made $26,907.18 and paid $1,737.18 in federal taxes. Why do I owe an additional $1,400.00 in federal taxes? I am 68 years old, married filing separately, and have no dependents. I also receive social security retirement income. My employer seems to be taking only 6% in federal taxes, while my tax preparer suggests they should be taking 12%. How can I ensure my employer is taking enough federal taxes, and how do I avoid owing additional federal taxes in the future?
