I received a Notice of Intent to Assess from the state of MA. I was expecting a refund, but the notice indicates that the withholding of $XXXX will be disallowed if I do not respond within 30 days. What happens if I do not respond within the 30 days, and will I be fined or just lose the refund?

We filed our tax return for 1999 and our income was 126K. We received a letter from the IRS stating we owe 105K and they sent a CP 503, which suggests they did not receive our tax return. How can I find out if they received it, and is there something online on their website to check the status of my tax returns?

As legal guardian for my sister who moved to an assisted-living facility in October 2014 due to developing mental impairments, I need to prepare her 2014 tax returns. Numerous expenses were incurred for the court guardianship hearing, including fees paid to the clerk of court, assigned guardian ad litem, attorney, and court-required bonding. Could you provide information about what might be deductible for tax purposes? Additionally, regarding her residency in the assisted-living facility, I receive and pay statements for prescribed drugs, physician and dentist services, and medical insurance. Might any part of the assisted-living services, such as routine checks by a resident nurse, daily aid with medications, and wellness activities, be deductible?

A taxpayer received $28,000 in disability income protection benefits, which was immediately paid into his C Corp. The payment was shown as income for the C Corp and a 1099-MISC was received from the insurance company. How can this income be passed to the C Corp, and can it be shown that the taxpayer subcontracted with the C Corp, given that he is the sole owner and a dentist?

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), if my adjusted gross income (AGI) for 2013 is $21,591 for a family of five, which is below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) of $27,570, and my children have coverage under Medicaid/CHIP, would my husband and I be exempt from the ACA penalty if we decide not to get health insurance coverage? How would I apply for this exemption, and are there any additional requirements to fulfill the 'hardship requirement'?
