I recently filed my tax returns for the years 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. I should have received a refund of over $11,000 for 2004 and 2005, but I owe $12,000 for 2006. I didn't realize there was a 3-year deadline for filing and claiming a refund. Would the IRS give me a tax credit for the 2004 and 2005 refunds to set off my tax debt? I have the same problem with NYS taxes, where the debt is even greater.

I lived in GA, but my ex-husband divorced me in TX in 2004 (the final decree does not have my signature), and I found out about this divorce in 2007. Now, I live alone with my two kids, and he says I can't declare the kids in my taxes because the final decree from TX says he is entitled to claim both kids on his taxes. He lives in another state and doesn't see the kids more than once a year, plus he left me and the kids without any money during the divorce. What can I do and what are my rights?

I want to claim my girlfriend's kids on my taxes, but she was a student and received about $4000 in student aid for the first term. Does this count as income? Additionally, the kids were part of the household for most of the year, not the whole year. Am I out of luck for claiming them this year?
