asked

If a 55-year-old handicapped son, who has lived with his mother his entire life and has been claimed as a dependent on her tax returns, did not receive stimulus checks because he was over 17 years of age, could he have received the stimulus payments if he had filed a tax return in 2019 and his mother had not included him as a dependent? If so, can an amended return be filed for 2019 for the mother not including him as a dependent, and a 'late' 2019 return be filed for the son? Additionally, on the son's 2020 tax return, can he claim the stimulus payments he should have received?
