I received a lawsuit settlement from a previous employer and was told to pay only Federal Taxes. Now, the state of CA is assessing an additional $2,939.39. Did I make a mistake by following the lawyer and company's advice? Should I have claimed it on my CA taxes? They want me to pay this amount, but I'm not in a position to do so. If I offer my savings of $1,800, would they consider it paid in full?

We are a small business that paid a lot in income taxes this year, with most of our profits going to taxes. We have about 14 employees and work for one company with plants all over. What can we do to reduce our tax burden? Can we buy houses to fix up and resell, put money in an IRA, or make other investments to help?
