Do you know anything about antique native Alaskan baskets? I am somewhat familiar with methods and materials, but I am having trouble finding one of comparable size. I have found modern ones of similar shape but they are very small in comparison. This one was purchased or bartered for by one of my maternal great grandfathers in 1910 directly from the weaver, as a gift for my grandmother. The basket is intact with a lid, pattern is faded but visible, and there is minor damage along the top rim. The basket without the lid is almost spherical, with dimensions as follows: small flat bottom is 5.5" diameter, height to rim 9", diameter is 12" at about 6" height, rim diameter is 6.5", lid height off basket is 3.5", total height with lid on is 12", the lid is conical with an inverted conical knob on top. I have never seen one of this shape and size except in a museum. How do I place an insurance value for actual replacement cost, and how do I handle its deterioration in the extreme climate of Nevada? I am also considering donating it to a museum in Washington State for tax purposes.
