It ran the first cycle with water and drained properly but then never refilled. The countdown clock was at 9 minutes. What should I check and how can I test if the valve is faulty?

I have a Kenmore Series 90 Gas Dryer with a model number (###) ###-####. The dryer has become more 'labored' when starting the motor, with a louder and longer duration humming sound than normal, and occasional squeaking.
