My dishwasher will not start. The start button doesn't seem to work, and when I opened the dishwasher today, the lock was active. I held it for 3 seconds and it went off. What could be the issue and what steps should I take to diagnose and potentially fix it?

Our oven made a strange noise while cooking, locked, and won't open, even after it cooled. It was on thermal oven at 350 degrees, not self-clean. Any suggestions? It is a 17-year-old 30-inch convection oven in black.
