I have a Kenmore series 70 dryer that only heats intermittently. All the fuses and thermostats check out ok. The element however only heats up when it wants to. Additionally, the timer is now working ok, but sometimes the gas doesn't light. I can see the element glowing but it doesn't light the gas. Also, I can smell gas coming out of the wall vent. What could be the issue and how can I fix it?

When I push the start-up button on my Kenmore dryer #73032102, it begins the drying cycle, but stops when I take my finger off the button. If I prop something on the button, the dryer works, and the timer and heat function fine. My husband installed a new switch provided by Sears, but it did not correct the problem. What could be causing this issue?
