My Whirlpool refrigerator is 4 years old and runs for 10 minutes then stays off for 10 minutes, more when I open the door. It also 'knocks' once when turning on and off. Is this normal, and do I have a problem?

Our Maytag Neptune top-load washing machine (FAV6800AWW) stops about 7 minutes into the cycle (at 22 minutes) and gets stuck in a repeating cycle that sounds like the gears turning around, a slight squeaking sound, and then stops/sits for another 15-30 seconds before repeating the same routine without progressing beyond the 22 seconds. We've tried stopping and starting another cycle, doing a spin cycle, and unplugging to reset, but the same routine occurs. The water is sitting and smells like sewer back-up. What could be causing this issue and how can we temporarily fix it to extract the smelly water?
