I have a corrupted Excel file (file.xlsx) with a password XXXXX. I inadvertently changed the file extension and then changed it back, which may have damaged the file. I can open an older version of the file but want to recover last year’s changes. I have tried various methods to open the file, including rebooting, using different machines, safe mode, Excel's open and repair option, and different software like Open Office and LibreOffice, but none have worked. Excel does not reach the password window and gives an error message: “Excel cannot open the file “xxx.xxx” because the file format or file extension is not valid.” I use Excel 2010. How can I recover the data from this corrupted file?
