My 10-year-old male greyhound, who weighs 95 pounds, stepped on glass a week ago, cutting his left front outer paw pad. The cut is about 1 centimeter across. He was limping badly but has started putting mild to moderate pressure on the paw. However, his paw has now swollen significantly, and he is not using that leg at all. The vet did X-rays and blood work, which showed no bone damage but possibly a tiny piece of glass in his paw. The blood work was normal, but the vet suspected an infection. He received a penicillin shot, antibiotics, and an anti-inflammatory. The paw is still swollen, and he is in noticeable pain. Should I ask the vet for pain medication? What can be done about the possible piece of glass in his paw? He also started coughing occasionally. Is there anything else I can do to reduce the swelling and better care for him?

My 5-year-old German Shepherd mix, Nika, ate 4mg of a suboxone film this morning. How long ago did she have this? How is she now? Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Nika?

My 5-year-old Lab/Bulldog, Lucky, starts making choking sounds about 5 feet from the front door when I attempt to walk him. Does he not like being on a leash? The vet has inspected him thoroughly and found no issues, but the problem persists.

My Great Dane, Marley (age 3), is licking the area where she urinates, which appears enlarged. She also vomited today. What could be the cause, and what should I be aware of?

Hello doc. I have a 4-year-old female Labrador who started having trouble getting up from the floor and crying in pain approximately 3 months ago. She was given ibuprofen by the vet, and while she no longer cries, the issue hasn't fully resolved. Recent tests for Lyme disease and other tick-borne viruses were negative, as were X-rays of her hips and pelvis. She has been on carprofen with little change. The vet suggested another pain medication, steroids, or a referral to a neurologist or orthopedic specialist. We've been trying to rest her, but it's challenging with our energetic 3-month-old male lab. What are your thoughts on what is going on? Do we take the next step with a specialist? MRI?
