My 10lb, 10-year-old Shorkie started coughing intermittently around 5pm, which progressed to a deep dry cough by 9pm. She had heavy coughing fits at 2am that lasted 5-7 minutes each. Her nose is dry, eyes are a little watery, and she hasn't thrown up, but her coughing triggers her gag reflex. Her appetite is fine, and she's drinking more water. My 16-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Charlie, is losing weight despite eating and drinking. She has lost her hearing, sight, and smell, and seems to obsess over food. She has difficulty sitting and her back hips seem to be the worst affected. She is getting skinnier every day, and her tail is always between her legs with no real emotions. She occasionally vomits and has no real control over her toilet habits. How do I know if it's time to consider euthanasia, and what should I look for in terms of her quality of life?
