We have a pair of sibling dogs that came into our shelter. The male dog has had about a third of his tail cut off, and it is raw but not bleeding. He licks it frequently. Warren weighs 36.5 lbs, and there isn't enough tissue to close the wound. Should we have the tail further amputated by a vet to allow a skin flap for healing, or could it heal on its own with an e-collar and antibiotics? We are a 501(c)3 non-profit shelter with limited funds due to COVID-19, so we prefer the least expensive route if possible.
