My 5-year-old dog, Gertrude, has been experiencing bloody diarrhea with a slime-like texture and fishy odor. She is straining and has large amounts of diarrhea followed by small amounts. She has not been vomiting and is alert but has been lying down most of the day. She has not been drinking much, and her appetite is affected. She recently had a small amount of chocolate, which might have contributed to her condition. What should I do until I can get her to a vet?

My 10-year-old Zuchon dog, Berger, has been experiencing bloody pudding-like stools with blood clots and mucous, and occasional pain on the left side midway down his body for several weeks. The dog seems thirstier than usual, but otherwise has normal energy levels and no vomiting. The vet-prescribed medicine for inflammation isn't working much.
