My dog has been taking Cephalexin for a gum infection for two weeks. Is the effect of this antibiotic only temporary, and should the infection be over after two weeks? She's nearing 16 years old, and I don't feel comfortable with her having dental work done. Is the healing with Cephalexin only temporary?

My 3-year-old collie, who is very fit and weighs 14.4kg, collapses and lies panting after running non-stop for a while. She stands up shaky on her hind legs and takes nearly an hour to recover.
