My dog passed away 2 years ago from heart failure. He was a 14-year-old Shih Tzu with relatively good health. He had dry coughing for three days before passing, and the emergency vet found heartworm, an enlarged heart, and cloudiness in the chest, possibly indicating cancer. I have several concerns: 1) Did my husband's decision to continue walking our dog for several hours around Philadelphia a month before his passing overwork his heart and contribute to his death? 2) Did the anesthesia and surgery a month before his passing, where a lump was removed and a decayed tooth was extracted, directly cause his passing? 3) Could I have saved or extended his life if I had brought him to the vet on the first day of his coughing?
