For 5 or 6 weeks, I have been experiencing headaches that worsen with bending over, coughing, exertion, or Valsalva maneuver. The pain is located above my ears and around the back of my head. My primary care doctor ruled out sinus infection and suggested allergies, but the headaches worsened. He then ordered a brain MRI without contrast and mentioned a lumbar puncture next. My coworker, whose daughter has a brain tumor, questioned why the MRI was without contrast, as it might not detect a tumor. What is the benefit of a 'w/o contrast MRI' if the problem is headaches?
