My father had a triple heart bypass on September 23rd. He is now off life support and kidney dialysis, breathing well on his own, and no longer sedated but on morphine. He can only communicate by squeezing hands or gasping yes or no to questions about discomfort or pain, and seems very distressed. Can he not talk due to the drugs, medication, or the fact he was on a ventilator? Should we tell him that what he is experiencing is 'normal' and due to the drugs to help him be less distressed about being unable to communicate? What are the effects of coming off life support slowly, especially as his heart is still a little unstable?
