My best friend had open heart surgery in December 2010, involving a triple bypass and valve replacement using a vein from her left leg. It's now March 2011, and her left leg is still swollen with no pain. Is this normal, and what could be causing it?

My husband, Jack, is 75 years old and has had heart surgery and a stroke in the past. He is experiencing severe swelling in his feet, making it difficult to wear shoes.
