A friend asked me to put her car in my name during financial difficulties, and she accumulated approximately 700 EZPass toll violations. I forwarded her the notifications, and she assured me she was handling them. I received a notice from Maryland CCU stating I owe $45,000, which will be taken from my state tax return. EZPass and Maryland CCU cannot transfer the violations to her name. 1) How is it legal for EZPass/MD transportation authority to impose a 750% fine, and do I have any recourse? 2) With texts from my friend admitting fault, but the amount being too high for small claims court, what legal direction should I take or what type of lawyer should I consult?
