I am a retired disabled fireman in Louisiana. The retirement board cut my monthly benefits because I received a $140,000 lump sum medical reimbursement settlement. The settlement was for medical expenses they did not cover when I went out on sick leave in 2008. The retirement board took the entire $140,000 out of my benefits, even though $36,000 went to attorneys' fees. Is this legal, and what steps can I take to challenge this?
