I am a special education teacher moving to the 5th grade where I will write IEPs and help students in all areas, but my main concern is 5th grade math which involves 4-digit by 3-digit multiplication and long division. Many special education students get overwhelmed by these multi-step processes. I have been studying an easier way to teach these skills using visual representations and expanded numbers, but other teachers are concerned about confusing the students with too many approaches. I want to change the materials and/or methods used to meet the standard, seeing this as an accommodation rather than a modification. Would this be written in the IEP accommodation section, and how would it be written? Additionally, I have a parent requesting an IEP meeting due to concerns about long multiplication and division problems.
