I had a partner who made me buy him a motorcycle, Bowflex gym equipment, and cars under my name and credit. We are no longer together, and I'm dealing with unpaid debts and bills. I tried to contact him, but he doesn't respond. I'm married now, and he is out of the U.S., possibly trying to drop his U.S. citizenship. I was in a restaurant business with my wife, where she ran the business and I constructed the building. She never paid the withholding taxes for employees, and my name was on the corporation. After she left, I had to close the business, and my building and home were foreclosed on. The IRS claims I owe them $51,000 and placed a lien against me. I am on Social Security and have no resources. Do I need an attorney to negotiate a settlement with the IRS, or should I try to do it myself? If an attorney is needed, how can I find a local one specializing in this discipline, and how can I check their record?
