Section 1 of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 states that the President may divide land west of the Mississippi River into parcels for the reception of Native American tribes who choose to exchange their current lands. This language suggests a voluntary exchange. Do you think the removal process was truly voluntary, or do you believe coercion by the federal government was practiced? If the latter, was President Jackson abusing Presidential powers in his administration of the Act?
