My previous employer has threatened to sue me if I did not return to work after I quit. I am technically a self-contractor and we have signed no contracts. He has made idle threats personally and legally. What can I do to protect myself if he does decide to try and sue me? He has said I will owe him 10s of thousands of dollars. I believe this is blackmail and harassment. What should I do?

If there was no written employment contract, there would be no legal claim for you to return to work...

My mother died 10 years ago, and her husband just died in December 2023. They were still married when she passed, and her name was still on their current bank account. Could her children get anything from the estate?

Is it true that if I file a claim with the small claims court in Miami-Dade, FL, the court will first call for a mediation between the parties? Where can I read about how this court-mandated mediation compares to a private mediation before going to court?

I had a tree cut down by a tree surgeon, and a branch fell on my neighbor's fence, bending the top metal rail. The tree surgeon took the rail to fix but hasn't done so after over two weeks. I've called him multiple times, and he promised to come but hasn't. My neighbor believes it's my responsibility to get it fixed and has threatened to hold me accountable if it's not resolved. I am in Florida. Is this correct, and what legal actions can I take?

Hi Ellen, I had a question regarding a court case and the potential costs involved, as well as a recent 30-day notice from my landlord. I mentioned that I had already tried a few things before considering court and expressed concerns about the costs and reliability of experts. Can you provide some guidance on what to do next?
