My son and daughter-in-law rented an apartment in North Carolina and got two dogs, for which they paid a non-refundable pet deposit and signed a lease addendum. Since then, they have received notices about the dogs barking, not picking up after them, and being on the deck, culminating in a notice stating the apartment is unsanitary and the dogs cannot be kenneled there. They have been given until Monday to remedy the situation. My son has checked with neighbors who have not complained, and they maintain a clean apartment. How does the landlord 'know' the apartment is unsanitary, has she been inside without their knowledge, and do they have any legal recourse to get out of their lease for base housing?
