I was living with a man in South Carolina. He pursued me for months, asked me to marry him, and convinced me to move from NYC to Charleston. I paid six months' rent in advance for an apartment for us. I caught him cheating and made him leave. He owes me around $5500 for music equipment, rent, gas, and food that I purchased. He agreed he owes this but said he can't pay because he doesn't have the money. His friend told me he received an email from him asking him to lie to me and steal from my apartment. He is now saying it's against the law for me to hold any of his belongings and he's going to call the police. What are my rights?
