I am 27, engaged, and had our first baby in December. I make about $100,000 plus an additional $20,000 with per diem, and I collect $820 (50% military disability). My fiancée makes about $70,000 a year. We are trying to determine the best way to file taxes: together, separately, or individually. Who should claim the baby? Additionally, I used to file through H&R Block, but I've heard that individual tax professionals might get more money back. Should I file online, through an individual tax person, or continue with a service like H&R Block? Also, I am a contracted employee working in Louisiana but residing in Florida. Can I claim rent and other expenses related to this arrangement? Finally, I recently bought a used 2013 car that was a loaner from Mercedes. Can I claim this as a business expense, and how should I handle medical expenses and mileage deductions?

My husband and I received our federal tax refund in November 2013 after filing before the October 15th deadline. Today, I found a 'sorry we missed you' slip from the US Postal Service in our mailbox, indicating that a certified letter from the IRS awaits us. I am extremely careful and vigilant about our mail, particularly when it comes to bills and other serious matters, and I am certain that we have not received any previous notices from the IRS. After reviewing our 2012 return, I think we may have been overpaid by about $370.00. What could this certified letter be about, and what should we do next?

I missed sending two 1099's after I submitted the forms to the IRS. I'm reading that I just need to send the two new 1099's along with a 1096. Should the 1096 I'm about to send include ALL 1099's including the previous one I sent, or just the totals for the two new ones?

Someone stole my identity in 2009 and has been filing taxes as me and receiving the returns every year since. I've talked with the police, made a report, contacted the IRS, filled out an affidavit, and contacted all three credit report agencies, putting a freeze on my social. Despite this, someone has still been successful. Can I sue the IRS for not doing anything about this? The only thing they did was make a note and send me 100 books to stop identity theft.
