I have a full-time college student who did not receive the stimulus payments because I claimed him last year on my taxes. This year, if he files as his own and I don't claim him, he can potentially get the $1200 and $600 stimulus payments. However, he received a $800 payment from his college, which might be related to the CARES Act. My 19-year-old daughter, who is a dependent on my taxes, earned $11,000 in 2020 and received $7,600 in unemployment benefits. TurboTax indicates she owes $870 in federal tax and $2,250 in Maryland tax, which seems high. Why is her unemployment income being taxed at my rate rather than at her income level, and is this correct?
